Obituary

Leonard Barry Halpern, born to Herman (Hy). Halpern and Esther (Skolnick) Halpern, was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 14, 1943. He is married to Jaye (Asnis) Halpern and is survived by daughter Alexis Halpern, her partner Chad Thomas and granddaughter Maya Belle Halpern-Thomas, brothers Martin Halpern and Arnold Halpern, and sister-in-law Davie (Asnis) Epstein.

Len spent his early years in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, and moved to Oceanside, New York in 1955. After graduating from Oceanside High School in 1961 he attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, graduating with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He married Jaye in 1965 and moved to Pottstown, PA, where he worked for Firestone until 1967. Shortly thereafter, Len moved to New Jersey and worked for Shell Oil for a number of years, eventually moving to Cherry Hill in 1971.

After working as a chemical engineer at Shell, Len earned his MBA at Drexel and was hired as a controller at Melitta Coffee before eventually moving on to ARCO Chemical Company in 1975.

During his years at ARCO his interests and talents in negotiations led him to pursue a law degree. While working full time as a business manager, Len took classes in the evenings and eventually earned his JD from Rutgers Law School in Camden, New Jersey. His continued role at ARCO demanded a lot of international travel but also provided a great opportunity for Len to see the world.

After briefly working as an independent consultant, he was eventually lured back to the corporate world in a joint venture for ARCO.

Len continued to work with the company in Philadelphia, and when ARCO was purchased by Lyondell, Len accepted a VP position in Houston, Tx where served until he retired in 2000.

After returning to Cherry Hill as a retiree, Len became an amateur cyclist and professional beach goer. Most of his miles on his bicycle were logged in the state of New Jersey and, at times, Pennsylvania and Florida. He spent his summers in Cape May and his winters in Pompano Beach. His favorite place was Grant Street Beach in Cape May, and his favorite things were baseball, ice cream and his family.

Relatives and friends are invited on Thursday, March 28, 2024 beginning 2:30 pm to PLATT MEMORIAL CHAPELS, Inc. 2001 berlin Road, Cherry Hill, NJ where funeral services will begin promptly at 3:00 pm
