Freda Kale

Cherry Hill, New Jersey

FREDA F. KALE
of Hollywood, FL and Portland, OR, passed away on March 25, 2026 at the age of 103. Wife of the late Jacob “Jack” Kale and later, wife of the late Herman Uhr. Mother of the late Denise/Davidah Kale, the late Cynthia Kale and Keith Kale. Grandmother of Alysia (Steve Morgan) Hayas, Jaclyn (fiancé Ari Sharfstein) Best and Anna Kale-Brown. Great-Grandmother of Deniella Morgan.

Freda was born on January 17, 1923, in Philadelphia, PA to Isadore and Anna Fagan. Isadore and Anna had fled Russia at the turn of the century to escape the Pogroms on Jews in that part of the world. She was the youngest of five siblings, sisters Faye Schwartz (neé Fagan), Lena (Lee) Strauss (neé Fagan), and brothers Benjamin (Ben) Fagan and Michael (Mike) Fagan. She attended Kensington High School in Philadelphia. She later met Dr. Jack Kale, a dentist, and they were married on March 21st, 1948. Two years later their first child, Denise, was born, followed by Cynthia in 1954, and Keith in 1957. During this time, they lived in Pennsauken, New Jersey, and Jack had a dental practice in Camden, where Freda often worked as his receptionist.

Jack died suddenly in 1969; his passing was a tragic loss for the family. Freda persevered, continuing to raise Cynthia and Keith, who were still young and living at home. In 1974, Freda and Dr. Arlyn Miller started Singles, Social, and Self Awareness Seminars, an endeavor to bring together single adults for social gatherings and interpersonal development.

In the early 1980s, Freda met Herman Uhr, and the two spent over 20 happy and loving years together, splitting their time between Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Hollywood, Florida. Herman died in 2006.

Freda faced many hardships throughout her life, outliving her two daughters, Cynthia, who died in 1997 and Denise, who died in 2006. Amidst these losses, her resilient spirit shone through. She had countless friends throughout her life, some lasting many decades. She was well known for her cooking, hospitality, storytelling, singing, and was a keen Rummikub player. Freda was inspired by the Jewish Renewal movement, which revitalized her connection to Judaism in her later years.

In 2015, she moved to Portland, Oregon, to be closer to her son Keith and granddaughter Anna. During these final years of her life, you could find her singing along to Frank Sinatra and other music of the 40s and 50s, of which she knew every lyric and sang every note perfectly, playing Rummikub, talking about “the bubbeleh” (her great-granddaughter), and being deeply cared for and loved by Keith. Freda Kale was a loving and cherished wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to countless people spanning over a century, and will be missed by all.
