EDWARD FELDMAN, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and business leader in the wine and liquor industry, passed away in Voorhees, NJ on May 10, 2024.
Edward was born on January 28, 1927, in Bayonne NJ, the youngest of four sons of Annie Hiller Feldman and Max Feldman. In 1948, Edward graduated from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1951, he married Ruth Smith and resided in Merchantville, NJ. They had four children: Richard Joseph in 1953, Bruce Frank in 1956, Beth Marjorie in 1959, and Marcia Hope in 1962.
After graduation, Edward began his career in the wholesale wine and liquor business. He oversaw the establishment of Merchants’ Wine and Liquor Company in Camden, NJ and was an integral part of its growth as it moved to larger facilities in Pennsauken and then Mt. Laurel. Ed served as President of Merchants for many years until it merged into the F&A (Feldman & Altschuler) Distributing Co. in the late 1980’s. He was an officer of F&A and served on the F&A Board of Directors. When Allied Beverage Group was formed in 1996, Ed was an original officer and he continued to serve on the Allied Board of Directors until the present day.
In addition to his dedication to his wife, raising a family and managing the business, Edward was an active member of the Beth Jacob synagogue community for many years. He and Ruth hosted large family gatherings in their home for the Jewish holidays, and other occasions celebrating with their children, grandchildren, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. They had a wide circle of friends, played bridge, participated in a gourmet cooking club, and often traveled together with friends domestically and overseas. One of Ed’s favorite traditions for many years was an annual New Year’s Eve film festival in New York, attending with a close group of friends. Edward was also an avid sports fan and an Eagle’s season-ticket holder for many years. He closely followed current events and read extensively, and especially enjoyed spy thrillers.
Ed loved to travel with Ruth, their children, and grandchildren. There were several multi-generational vacations and trips traveling as a group of 15 or more which fostered a special bond among family members.
Edward cared a great deal about the Jewish community. He was a generous contributor to the Jewish Family & Children’s Services of Southern New Jersey, the State of Israel, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children, Shriners Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He supported many other causes as well.
Ed is survived by his wife of 73 years, Ruth Smith Feldman; his son Richard Feldman and son-in-law Marco Prado of Philadelphia, PA; his son Bruce Feldman and daughter-in-law Wendy Engelson of Fairfax, Virginia; his daughter Beth Feldman and son-in-law Jeffrey Desman of Moorestown, NJ; and his daughter Marcia Feldman Rost of Voorhees, NJ; his grandchildren Jessica (Sid Fine) Feldman, Matthew Feldman, Andrew Feldman, Jaime Desman, Jacob Desman, Mitchell Desman, Hayley Rost, and Rachel Rost; Brother-in-law David Smith and his wife Bobbi; and many nieces and nephews.
Edward is pre-deceased by his older brothers and sisters-in-law: Dr. Emmanuel Feldman and his wife Florrie, Dr. Matthew Feldman and his wife Shirley, Myron Feldman and his wife Nettie.
