Dr. Edward H. Tobe

Cherry Hill, New Jersey

Dr. Edward Hardin Tobe, 78, passed away at 3:35pm on March 26, 2025, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Born on October 24, 1946, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Dr. Tobe lived a life filled with love for his family, humor, intellectual curiosity, professional dedication, and a profound commitment to advancing the field of neuropsychiatry.

A proud graduate of Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh, Edward earned his Bachelor’s degree from Franklin & Marshall College and his medical degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. These academic foundations paved the way for a remarkable career spanning over five decades.

In his private practice, Edward blended compassionate care with relentless curiosity and innovation. As a Board Certified adult and child psychiatrist and classical psychoanalyst, he authored numerous publications that explored neuropsychiatric illnesses through molecular, social, cultural, occupational, and intrapsychic perspectives. His pioneering research challenged traditional diagnostic frameworks and treatments, introducing novel approaches that expanded the boundaries of mainstream medical literature.

At the heart of Edward's life was his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Katarzyna Tobe; children from his first marriage to Stacey Tobe-Eichberg (nee Lessey): Justin Tobe, Chris Tobe (wife Denise Tobe, nee Parker), Craig Tobe (wife Meredith Tobe, nee Brintnall); his grandchildren Lillianna Tobe, Carr Tobe and Nathan Tobe; and his step daughter Dahlia Halicki (partner Patrick Haley); step-granddaughters Paige Quitugua (nee Szvoren, husband Alex Quitugua), Reed Szvoren, and Annabel Szvoren; nephews Dr. Brian Tobe and Dr. Russell Tobe; and many cherished extended family members.

Edward came from a family of distinguished achievement and service. In his youth, he proudly earned the rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting his early dedication to leadership and community values. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother-in-law, Natalie Lessey (nee Jacobs); his paternal grandfather, Louis Tobe, who immigrated to Pittsburgh and started a family; his parents, Mildred and David Tobe, with David being a respected attorney and veterans advocate who also ran a coal company and a newspaper in Pittsburgh; his aunt, Sylvia Tobe, an accomplished musician and pioneering female podiatrist; his uncle, Robert Tobe, an engineer turned hematologist/oncologist; his brother, Dr. Russell H. Tobe, a man of many professions who became a lawyer, engineer, physician, and board-certified radiologist; and his aunt, Marion Tobe-Zinkham, a dedicated master teacher.

Beyond his professional and academic pursuits, Edward deeply enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He cherished good wine, classical music, writing poetry, caring for his koi pond, and engaging in thoughtful, lively conversations. His sharp wit, infectious curiosity, and warm presence filled every room with light and laughter. Above all, his family remained the center of his world, and he treasured every moment spent with them. His enduring love, wisdom, and kindness leave a legacy that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
