Cherry Hill, New Jersey
Alice Kraus was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, dear friend and teacher during her 88 years of life. She was born on October 12, 1935, in Raciborz, Germany (now Poland), and passed away at her home in Woodbury, New Jersey on December 9, 2024.
Alice survived the Holocaust as a child and emigrated to the United States with her mother via Angel Island. Her father escaped Buchenwald concentration camp, and the family reunited in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Indiana University for one year and completed her degree in history at Glassboro State College (now Rowan University) in 1979. Alice retained a wide variety of interests throughout her life. She loved to travel and worked as a substitute teacher at West Deptford High School. Alice was an avid reader, bridge and Mahjong player, runner, tennis player and artist. She spoke across the Tri-State Area and the broader U.S. to tell her family’s story and to further Holocaust education amongst young people.
Alice was deeply resilient and channeled her grief of losing the majority of her family into being an extraordinary mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Having a large and loving family from her two children meant the world to her. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Ernest; children Cheryl (formerly married to Scott) Sher and Dennis (Daryl) Kraus; grandchildren Devon Kraus, Cameron Kraus, Collin Kraus, Justin (Kelly) Sher, Brendon Sher, Courtney Sher, Jaxon Sher, Lilli Sher and Austin Sher; great-grandchildren Fletcher Sher, Bernice Sher and Tessa Sher. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jacob and Edith Schockner.
